Exciting news in Chevak

Last week I received a phone call from my friend Shawna in Chevak who told me that the people in her village wanted to start Young Life.  Chevak will the first village in Alaska to have native community members operate their own Young Life program!  Shawna will be dedicating her time to forming a team to reach the kids of her village.

Here are some of the pieces God has moved to bring Young Life to Chevak:
  • Shawna's 2 younger brothers became involved in Young Life at MEHS and formed friendships with Brent Cunningham (now the state director of Young Life)
  • Brent Cunningham visited Chevak about 10 years ago in the winter to visit kids and share about Young Life
  • A young teaching couple in Chevak met Brent and one of the two teachers had been involved with Young Life during college
  • The young teaching couple, the Kellars, develop a huge heart for the people in Chevak (previous blog entry from Chevak) and stay connected to Shawna and her family for years after they leave the state.
  • Shawna's family has a huge heart for their community and the kids in their community and remembers the name Young Life
  • Shawna feels God's calling on her life to dedicate her time to reaching the kids of her community
  • The Kellars are feeling called to support the people of Chevak how ever God will lead.
It is truly exciting to see how God is calling native people to share his good news.  Please pray for guidance and protection over Shawan, the Slats, the Kellars, and over all the people involved.  Pray that God would be glorified to the youth of Chevak.
